New Report Finds Supersonic Aviation Closer Than It Has Been Since Concorde

Warsaw, Poland; Lima, Peru (July 22, 2026) — We Are Innovation has just unveiled a new report, titled “Breaking the Sound Barrier Again. Supersonic flight is closer to returning than at any time since Concorde. The question now is on what terms, and for whom” With supersonic aviation being closer to returning than at any time since the Concorde, the document assesses the technological, regulatory and commercial implications surrounding it, examining its historical context and current policy landscape.

The authors argue that advances in aircraft design, sustainable propulsion, digital engineering and low-boom technology have created the strongest conditions for a supersonic revival in more than 50 years. However, they also warn that significant engineering, environmental, and regulatory hurdles must still be overcome before commercial services become a reality.

Tracing the aviation industry’s evolution from Concorde and the U.S. 1973 overland supersonic flight ban to today’s generation of aerospace startups, the report presents the following key findings:

  • Commercial supersonic travel is now being driven by venture-backed innovators rather than established aerospace manufacturers.
  • Modern aircraft are being designed with low-boom aerodynamics, advanced composite materials, digital fly-by-wire systems and engines capable of operating on 100% Sustainable Aviation Fuel.
  • Regulatory reform in the United States has accelerated following recent federal action directing the review of long-standing restrictions on overland supersonic flight.
  • Independent forecasts suggest the global supersonic aircraft market could reach between US$35 billion and US$70 billion over the next decade.
  • The most likely commercial pathway is a limited premium market serving long-haul transoceanic routes before broader expansion later in the 2030s.

Nevertheless, despite the renewed momentum, the authors also cast some warnings. Developing and certifying an entirely new supersonic engine remains one of the industry’s greatest risks, while environmental performance continues to present major challenges. Even with sustainable aviation fuels, supersonic aircraft are expected to consume substantially more fuel per passenger than conventional aircraft, and the climate impacts of high-altitude operations remain under active scientific investigation.

Furthermore, the research notes that the regulatory reform regarding this issue remains incomplete. Although governments have begun modernising decades-old restrictions, overland commercial supersonic flight will require new international noise standards and extensive certification before widespread operations can begin.

Rather than forecasting a rapid return to mass-market supersonic travel, the report concludes that the most realistic scenario is the gradual introduction of premium transatlantic services in the early 2030s, followed by broader market expansion as technology matures, costs decline and international regulations evolve.

While challenges remain, supersonic aviation is no longer a futuristic concept but an emerging reality. The next five years will determine whether today’s wave of innovation delivers the world’s first new generation of supersonic passenger aircraft, or joins the long list of ambitious aerospace projects that never happened. Either way, the race to shrink global travel times has started again.
